Cristiano Ronaldo will not face charges for the alleged sexual assault of a woman in Las Vegas 10 years ago, the Clark County District Attorney's Office has confirmed.

'The allegations of sexual assault against Cristiano Ronaldo can not be proven beyond a reasonable doubt, ' they said in a statement.

However, in a statement provided by the prosecutors, Ronaldo was cleared after the sexual assault claims "could not be proven beyond reasonable doubt". "Therefore, no charges will be forthcoming", the statement from the district attorney's office read.

She accused Ronaldo of asking to perform a sex act on him, leading her to refuse and say she wanted to leave the hotel.

Ronaldo's attorney, Peter Christiansen, wasn't immediately available to comment. He denied it was rape.

Attorneys for Ronaldo's accuser, former model and schoolteacher Kathryn Mayorga, did not immediately respond to telephone, text and email messages.

"A short time later, sexual assault detectives arrived at the hospital and made contact with V. Although she knew who the person was who assaulted her, V refused to identify him or disclose where the crime occurred". Mayorga gave consent through her lawyers to make her name public.

Mayorga filed a separate civil lawsuit in a U.S. federal court claiming Ronaldo used "fixers" to stop her pursuing criminal charges, including a payment of $375,000 (€334,000), which Ronaldo's lawyer has not denied.

Mayorga's attorney, Leslie Mark Stovall, has acknowledged that Mayorga received $375,000 in hush money following the 2009 encounter.

The lawsuit seeks to void the agreement and collect at least 200,000 dollars (£160,000) more from Ronaldo.

It came after she claimed she was assaulted by Cristiano Ronaldo on June 13, 2009, as he partied in Las Vegas. She spoke again with police for the new inquiry, and authorities this year obtained a sample of Ronaldo's DNA.

The case was reopened and investigated by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, but the nine years between the initial police report and the investigation proved costly.
