World celebrates 50 years of Apollo 11 touchdown at Moon

Astronaut Buzz Aldrin arrives for President Trump's State of the Union address on Feb. 5 2019

"That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind": it was with these words that Neil Armstrong became the first person to set foot on the Moon 50 years ago, an occasion celebrated by space enthusiasts globally Saturday.

Of the 12 people who walked on the moon during 9 Apollo Missions from 1968 to 1972, one, David Scott, was perhaps most comfortable in a weightless environment.

Three recordings of the historic Apollo 11 mission were sold at auction. Over the course of the mission, he would walk on the moon 3 times; in his career, he logged more than 20 hours in EVA (space-walk) time, both on the moon and in orbit. The three already living on the space station also were born long after the moon landings.

Visitors participate in an Apollo 11 virtual reality ride on the 50th anniversary of the moon landing at the Charles Simonyi Space Gallery at the Museum of Flight in Seattle.

"Fifty years ago today, we achieved the world's greatest human accomplishment, and what we universally recall about that event is best documented on these tapes", said Cassandra Hatton, vice president and senior specialist in Sotheby's Books & Manuscripts Department, said in a release. Meeting with Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin on Friday, Mr. Trump grilled NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine about the logistics of getting a man on Mars. "And we are well on our way to getting this done". The capsule on deck for the program's first operational mission in 2022 was sitting beside the stage.

Pence, chairing the White House's National Space Council, announced in March an accelerated schedule for NASA to return astronauts to the moon by 2024, halving the United States space agency's previous timeline to get there by 2028 and requesting from Congress a $1.6 billion boost to NASA's fiscal 2020 budget request.

"Out there was this little pea about the size of your thumbnail at arm's length: blue, white, very shiny, you get the blue of the oceans, white of the clouds, streaks of rust we call continents, such a lovely gorgeous tiny thing, nestled into this black velvet of the rest of the universe". The anniversary has also been an opportunity for the Chinese internet to showcase the lighter side of the moon, with a video compilation of astronauts stumbling while walking on the heavenly body's surface going viral as well.

"I got to actually go out to the launchpad. and got to see when it blasted off", said Darla Van Dyke. "President Trump and Vice President Pence have given us a bold direction as an agency to return to the moon within five years and go forward to Mars", Bridenstine said.

Collins, though, chimed in that he supported the idea of "Mars direct", referring going directly to Mars without first returning to the Moon.
