Thomas Gallatin: The Real Strategy for Trump and Democrats

Donald Trump told minority congresswomen to 'go back' to their home countries

"This is a distraction", Tlaib added.

The comments, targeting Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts, Rashida Tlaib of MI and Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, have been roundly condemned. "Anyone who disagrees with them on anything, including the Speaker of the House".

"The fact of the knowledge is, and I've done racial justice work in our country for a long time, acknowledge the fact that we are women of color, so when you do single us out, be aware of that, and what you're doing", Tlaib continued.

"You know, they talk about people of color", Kelly told a Vice News reporter before the vote.

"We're all created equal", the statement said.

But the CBS host Gayle King also challenged Pressley over her description of Trump as the "occupant" of the White House.

But when asked at a White House press conference if he was anxious that his comments chimed with white supremacists, Mr Trump said: "It doesn't concern me because many people agree with me".

All 235 House Democrats voted in favor of the resolution that decried the president's tweet as "racist," while all but four Republicans in the chamber voted against the measure. Critics were outraged by the racist trope.

"Excuse me, Ms. Omar, but I've been paying a good deal of attention to this so-called "squad" of yours and can't help but think that I might make an exciting addition to join in on the fun", The Onion "quoted" Pascrell as saying (in case you had any doubt, yes, the articles in The Onion are fiction).

On Wednesday, Trump tweeted remarks made by the Louisiana Senate Republican John Kennedy, calling them the "four horsewomen of the apocalypse" and "wack jobs". Green did so twice when Republicans controlled the House.

Ms Ocasio-Cortez, Ms Pressley and Ms Tlaib were each born in the United States, while Ms Omar is an American citizen who arrived in the country as a Somali refugee when she was a child.

Underscoring the stakes, Republicans formally objected after Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California said during a floor speech that Trump's tweets were "racist".

After the House voted 240-187 to condemn Trump's tweets, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy forced a vote to remove Pelosi's "racist" accusation from the record, which subsequently was blocked by House Democrats.

But Ocasio-Cortez also said there was no "fundamental fracture" between progressives and moderates.

For now, a majority of House Democrats appears to oppose impeachment. Ocasio-Cortez tweeted not long after, deploying smiley, heart and "dancing women with bunny ears" emojis.
