Man arrested in Spain on suspicion of smuggling cocaine under wig

Made toupee? Man 'tries to smuggle cocaine under his wig'

A Colombian man was detained at Barcelona's global airport after half a kilo of cocaine was found hidden under an over-sized toupee, Spanish police said on Tuesday. They found a package stuck to his head with about Sh3.5 million ($34,000) of cocaine.

The "considerably nervous" man, who arrived on a flight from Bogotá at the end of June, attracted officers' attention because his hairpiece was of "disproportionate size", authorities said Tuesday.

"The ingenuity of drug traffickers has no limit when trying to circumvent customs", police wrote in a Facebook post.

The man poses with the cocaine package on his head, which was worth more than $45,000.

Spain, with its historic and linguistic links to South America, is an important gateway for cocaine to Europe, mainly from Colombia.

Police have previously rumbled attempts to smuggle cocaine in hollowed-out pineapples, plaster casts, wheelchair cushions, breast implants and, in one instance, a 42-piece crockery set.

But passengers acting as mules are frequently caught trying to smuggle relatively small amounts of the drug through the country's airports, including Barcelona's El Prat airport.
