Somalia extremist attack in port city of Kismayo kills 10

According to CBC, the attack took place on Friday night when gunmen of the al-Qaeda group entered a hotel in the southern port city of Kismayu after first targeting the area with a vehicle bomb.

"We've lost a brilliant and promising member of our society in a bomb blast at a hotel in Kismayo, Somalia".

"A blast took place in Hotel Asasey within the center of Kismayo, followed by gunfire".

Ten foreigners including two Americans, one British, three Tanzanians, three Kenyans and one Canadian are among those killed in the attack that also left two Chinese among those injured.

He said authorities believed four gunmen, who one witness described as wearing Somali police uniforms, were involved in the attack.

The attack is the latest in a long line of bombing and assaults claimed by the al-Qaida-linked group.

The targeted hotel is known to be frequented by politicians and lawmakers.

He said the African Union's multinational force in Somalia will continue to work to stabilise the country.

"There are dead bodies and wounded people strewn inside the hotel", Abdiweli added. "They can not claim to be fighting to bring good governance to the country", he said in a statement issued in Mogadishu.

The attack occurred as local officials met inside the hotel ahead of a regional election in August.

The same group claimed responsibility for an attack on a hotel in Kenya in January that killed 21 people. Al-Shabab was ejected from Mogadishu in 2011 and has since been driven from most of its other strongholds.
