Olympic skier Gus Kenworthy and Pose's Angelica Ross are also joining the series, while AHS fans will see Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd, Cody Fern, and Leslie Grossman return to the series.

American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy took to Instagram to share new promo videos for American Horror Story: 1984, revealing a first look at the cast of characters as filming begins for the upcoming ninth season of FX's hit horror anthology series. Ross is known for her headline-grabbing work on FX's "Pose". Watch Murphy's teaser below. Variety reported that due to her involvement with the Murphy-produced Netflix series "Ratched", "AHS" favorite Sarah Paulson will only have a small part this year. The new season seems to draw inspiration from the 1980s slasher-movies like "Nightmare on Elm Street", "Jason", and a few of the "Halloween" movies.

Still, it's best not to rule out the Orwellian nature of the title.

Murphy's obvious affection for genre fare of all shapes and sizes has been well on display in the eight seasons preceding 1984, as episodes have covered (to varying degrees of effect) everything from menacing serial killers to creepy psych wards, insane carnies, a powerful coven of witches, and pretty much every other horror trope you can conjure. That season turned out to be themed around supernatural events tied to the mysterious disappearance of settlers in Virginia's Roanoke Colony during the 16th century.
