The 1-year-old daughter of an IN police officer died Sunday afternoon after she slipped from her grandfather's hands and fell from a cruise ship docked IN Puerto Rico, one day before their week-long voyage was to begin. She died a short time later.

Owen Torres, corporate communications manager with Royal Caribbean, said in a statement: "We are deeply saddened by yesterday's tragic incident, and our hearts go out to the family". He said officers have not been able to interview any relatives yet. The 18-month-old tot was rushed to hospital at around 4.30pm local time yesterday (9.30pm United Kingdom time) but passed away.

Sotelo said the toddler's maternal grandfather, Salvatore Anello of Valparaiso, Indiana, is under investigation.

Royal Caribbean International has been contacted for comment. "I looked when I heard the mother's cry".

"It is a very strong scene, very sad and tragic", Elmer Roman, secretary of the Department of Public Security, told the local Primer Hora website.

The man seems to have been playing when he held his one-year-old granddaughter out the window of the cruise ship, a public safety official in Puerto Rico said.

El Vocero reported the grandfather was holding the child when he slipped and fell into the window, and the child then fell from his arms to her death.

Royal Caribbean's "Freedom of the Seas" cruise ship is seen docked in Bayonne, New Jersey, in a 2006 file photo. That tonality, a scream of pain of that nature.

"They're in shock", he said.

WKMG reported that the girl hit an awning before landing on pavement at the dock.

According to Primer Hora, the ship's departure was delayed, with the captain issuing condolences over loudspeaker.

"We do not have further information to share at this point", the firm said.
