Sitting with old friends university friends Lindsey Roth and Genevieve Hills, the new mother cheered Williams on. Although there will be fewer than 25 people at the intimate gathering, Prince Harry and Meghan have made sure to invite their closest family, with proud grandfather, the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall, Meghan's mum, Doria Ragland and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on the guest list.

While there was no sign of Prince William or their baby son Archie, Meghan was spotted wearing a necklace with an "A" pendant.

The seven-time victor, who has been injured for much of this year, found her range at the start of the second set and went on to beat the 18-year-old Slovenian 2-6 6-2 6-4.

LONDON: Britain's Meghan turned up at Wimbledon on Thursday to lend some royal support her friend Serena Williams, who ruled herself out as a godparent to the duchess's son Archie.

It was the best possible start for a teenager, serving well in the first set and breaking the American twice for a 6-2.

Seven-time champion Serena Williams survived a scare to come through and reach the third round at Wimbledon on Thursday, beating Slovenian qualifier Kaja Juvan 2-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Juvan, making her debut in the Wimbledon main draw, was unfazed with Williams serving to stay in the set.

Meghan has always had a close friendship with Serena and the brunette beauty even watched the duke and duchess tie the knot at Windsor Castle previous year.

Archie will be christened Saturday in an intimate ceremony two months to the day after he was born.

She laughed with Wimbledon chairman Philip Brook and his wife, Gill, as they waited for the Swiss heavyweight to appear.

Kate, who is patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC), also wore white and sported a chic collared midi dress with black buttons down the front by British designer Suzannah.

She added: "Andy is a great player, like I said. I was really sporty when I was little, less so now that I've got lots of babies", the Duchess told the children.

In June, Meghan attended her first royal engagement since giving birth, joining Harry and the royal family for the annual Trooping the Colour parade, a belated birthday celebration for Queen Elizabeth II.
