Trump Says All 'Very Much Under Control' in Southern California After Earthquake

Strong earthquake hits Southern California, causing damage

Firefighters were seen battling the blaze.

Multiple people in San Luis Obispo County reported on social media that they had felt the quake.

The quake occurred about 7 miles outside Searless Valley, located about 130 miles east of Bakersfield and about 200 miles west of the Nevada border, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

At least 85 aftershocks of 2.5 or greater were recorded after the natural disaster, according to CNN Meteorologist Haley Brink. She says utility company Pacific Gas & Electric is assessing damage and cutting gas service to prevent further fires. Dozens of broken bottles and boxes of liquor were splattered across the floor.

This morning's temblor, which was felt as far as Los Angeles, was quickly followed by several smaller aftershocks in the area.

Jones said the quake was not on the San Andreas fault.

One Californian resident described the trembling on the website.

The Ridgecrest Regional Hospital has been evacuated, the Kern County Fire Department tweeted.

Diane Ruggiero, general manager of the Hampton Inn and Suites Ridgecrest in Ridgecrest, told CNN's Paul Vercammen that the hotel sustained significant damage.

Local emergency response agencies have been overwhelmed with calls, prompting the Los Angeles Police Department to request that residents only call with genuine emergencies.

A magnitude 6-4 quake was felt throughout the Southland Thursday, shaking up local residents celebrating the Fourth of July.

"We were just panicked trying to get out of the house because everything was just falling out of the cabinets, off the shelves, off the walls, pictures". It was like 15, 20 seconds, maybe. Fire officials said they were in quake mode as a result of the tremors.

Local authorities emphasized that the end of the quake did not mean residents were yet in the clear, however President Donald Trump wrote on Twitter that "All seems to be very much under control!"

Filmmaker Ava DuVernay tweeted, "Been living in Los Angeles all my life". "If you've never experienced it, you think am I out of my mind?" Not jerky. Smooth and rolling.

'It was so long I thought for the first time ever "Is this the big one?"

We hope everyone in California was able to stay safe during the quake as they can tend to be a scary experience. The area has suffered quake swarms in the past, including a series of some 2,500 tremors over the course of five weeks in the summer of 1995.

Jones said there was a better than 50-percent chance of a larger aftershock in the magnitude-5 area "sometime this afternoon".
