Rahul Gandhi removes `Congress President` from Twitter bio after confirming his resignation

On Wednesday, Rahul had removed the tag of party president from his Twitter bio hours after confirming his resignation from the top post. The Congress party won 52 seats and the All India Trinamool Congress led by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee won 22.

This resignation saga began after the catastrophic loss of the Congress party in the Lok Sabha 2019 Elections and also the loss of Rahul Gandhi's stronghold in Amethi. "It would be unjust to hold others accountable but ignore my own responsibility as president of the party", the letter read.

Amid a leadership crisis in the Congress, senior leader Motilal Vora on Thursday said he will check with General Secretary K.C. Venugopal for possible dates of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting.

With the Gandhis overseas, a meeting of the CWC could be held without their presence but any decision on the next Congress chief would not be taken without their consent.

In his letter, Gandhi also criticized the BJP for "systematically crushing the voice of the Indian people".

Congress leaders that ThePrint spoke to said this was not the first time that Rahul had said he was not the party president. "That is the true essence of Bharat Mata", he said.

In June, as many as 145 office bearers of the Congress too quit the party.

In the letter, Gandhi said that every living cell in his body instinctively resists their (the BJP's) idea of India.

Speaking to reporters after the hearing, Mr. Gandhi said his fight against the ruling BJP will continue with more rigour, adding that he stands with the country's poor, farmers and labourers. We all are accountable for this defeat. Where they see hatred, I see love. "The instrument of this resuscitation will be the Congress party". The third option is to set in motion the election process, which a majority of leaders said is not advisable at such a juncture since it may divide the party. Our campaign was one of brotherhood, tolerance and respect for all of India's people, religions and communities.

He also said that India's institutions - its media, judiciary and election commission - were no longer independent but subservient to the BJP.

The Congress leader was summoned by the Mazgaon metropolitan magistrate's court in February this year, in response to a private complaint filed by Dhrutiman Joshi, a lawyer and worker of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh or RSS. The impact on our economy and nation's reputation will be devastating. In calling for accountability, he is effectively asking a group to self-destruct for the larger cause of the party, which in turn must fight for the larger cause of the country.
