Newark Liberty International Airport briefly grounds all flights following ‘airport emergency’

A United Airlines flight blew two tired during an emergency landing at Newark Airport FAA says

Newark Liberty International Airport has reopened after closing Saturday morning for an emergency.

Passengers were evacuated using the planes' emergency slides and then were taken by bus to a gate in the airport's C terminal, officials said.

At about 8:20 a.m., United Flight 2098, which is an Airbus 319, landed on Runway 22L at Newark, a law enforcement source told ABC News. The airport reopened an hour later but reported heavy delays.

It remains unclear at this time why EWR was shutdown.

"All I know is that 10 minutes after takeoff we weren't getting much altitude, we were just circling around northern New Jersey and not going anywhere", he said.

It was traveling toward Houston when it experienced "hydraulics problems" and was forced to make the emergency landing at Newark, Port Authority said in a statement.

The airport's Twitter account said at 8:46 a.m. that both inbound and outbound flights were stopped due to the emergency, but tweeted at 9:37 that flights have resumed with delays.

Airport representatives could not immediately be reached for comment.

A plane made an emergency landing Saturday morning, but aircraft became disabled upon landing, an official briefed on the situation told ABC News.

"When a pilot wants to get a plane down, he wants to get it down and he could care less about the rubber on the wheels", Boyd said.
