United States border chief resigns amid outcry over treatment of migrant children

US relocates migrant children over 'squalid' conditions

John Sanders is expected to make his resignation effective July 5, according to the officials, who spoke to NPR on condition of anonymity because an official announcement had not been made to agency employees. He did not give a reason for leaving. "Although I will leave it to you to determine whether I was successful, I can unequivocally say that helping support the unbelievable men and women of CBP has been the most fulfilling and satisfying opportunity of my career". The president defended USA border authorities, saying: "The laws are so bad and the asylum rules and laws are so bad that our Border Patrol people, who are so incredible, aren't allowed to do their jobs".

Veronica Escobar - who represents the El Paso, Texas, area - said that the government had moved most of the children from a facility in the small town of Clint, Texas, that housed migrants as young as a few months old.

Attorneys who visited the station last week said older children were trying to take care of infants and toddlers, The Associated Press first reported Thursday. Several had the flu.

Separately, border patrol in Texas reported the deaths of seven migrants this week who had apparently attempted to circumvent the immigration system - including two babies and a toddler.

Mr. Trump, speaking to reporters at the White House, said he is "very concerned" about the conditions children are facing at the border.

Although it's unclear where all the children held at Clint were moved, Escobar said some were sent to another facility on the north side of El Paso called Border Patrol Station 1. Former ICE acting director Thomas Homan, a Trump administration ally, then went on television to accuse McAleenan of leaking information about the operation because he opposed it.

CBP's facilities at the Mexican border were nearly all built when most people crossing the border illegally were single adults.

"One said they hadn't showered in three weeks. Children are being locked up in isolation with no adult supervision, who are very, very ill and they're just lying on the ground on mats".

Government facilities are overcrowded and five immigrant children have died since late past year after being detained by Customs and Border Protection. As of last week, border facilities built to hold perhaps 4,000 people had 15,000 people in them. Unaccompanied children are meant to be transferred to the care of HHS, which is responsible for their care while placing them with a sponsor in the United States.

Rights groups cautioned that Sanders's resignation would not end the mistreatment of immigrants in border centres. Clara Long of Human Rights Watch, who interviewed children at the facility, recounted a distraught child wearing a bracelet with the words "US parent" and a phone number, but found that her parents had no idea where she was or the conditions she was being held in. They had been held at the facility for weeks. "This is only the tip of the iceberg".

Vice President Mike Pence on Sunday told CNN's Jake Tapper on "State of the Union" that "of course" those items are necessary basics for children but punted to Congress when asked about the Trump administration's inaction.
