Trump eyes former immigration official as his border czar

Mexico announced recently that it’s sending National Guard agents to its southern region for immigration enforcement

Later in the day, a Mexican official told Reuters news agency that the USA had increased the return of asylum seekers to Mexico through the El Paso, Texas port of entry to around 200 a day.

Trump said Homan would probably be based out of the White House but would spend much of his time at the U.S. -Mexico border, where there has been a surge of Central American migrant families.

Tom Homan, the former acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, will be coming back to the administration as a "border czar", President Donald Trump said Friday, as he "really wants" to be involved with the border.

Remain in Mexico now operates in Tijuana, Mexicali and Ciudad Juarez.

The U.S. will also expand its "Remain-in Mexico" policy of returning asylum applicants to Mexico while their claims are processed. However, Mexico has not accepted to receive an unlimited number of asylum seekers sent by the United States, said Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard.

"Today there is a meeting with US authorities, to learn, to discuss the ports of entry and how the number will be measured, because Mexico has not accepted that it be undetermined", he said at a news conference.

In another sign of turbulence, the head of the National Migration Institute, Tonatiuh Guillen, abruptly resigned Friday.

Immigration rights groups have slammed to possible "safe third country" agreement, saying that it would endanger asylum seekers by requiring them to make their claims in a country experiencing high levels of violence.

"The United States depends on Mexico for 15 percent, while Mexico depends 80 percent on this trade flow".

Mexico's government on Friday published the section of the joint accord which said Mexico would examine any changes to its legislation necessary to permit a safe third country arrangement to come into force 90 days after June 7.

The document adds that the agreement would be "part of a regional approach" to dealing with undocumented migrants and refugees. "Hey, 6,000 soldiers, and if it doesn't work out, then we go back to very strong measures", he said on Fox News.

In Washington, Trump appeared content to play nice with Mexico - for now.

"He'll be a border czar, reporting directly to me". He retired previous year, after increasing arrests of non-criminal immigrants.
