Gee: The one Father’s Day I will always remember

Thanks for Fathers

Just over half of the fathers said that they had been criticised about their parenting style or choices, with the most common source of criticism coming from the child's other parent.

The results published this week in the C.S. Mott Children's Hospital National Poll on Children's Health show that many dads are having a harder time than we might realise when it comes to doing the right thing in the eyes of others. A surprising 10 per cent of criticism came from complete strangers in public places, who felt that they needed to say something to a dad they didn't know.

The report is based on responses from a nationally-representative sample of 713 fathers of children 0-13 years old. It's a day to make your fathers feel special. For most, the honor of being called "dad" lies on the shoulders of the one who filled the role of the father figure-whether that's a dad, a granddad, a mentor, or whatever. "Family members - especially the other parent - should be willing to acknowledge that different parenting styles are not necessarily incorrect or harmful".

Although fathers were criticised over many things, two-thirds had received criticism about how they disciplined their child and nearly half had been criticized about what they chose to feed their child.

That could prove problematic for families, Clark said. But it's one of the most important areas for parents to find common ground.

Survey co-director Sarah Clark, University of MI, was quoted as saying, "Addressing a child's misbehaviour is one of the greatest challenges of parenting, and parents aren't always on the same page when it comes to expectations and consequences". There were about 150 dads and their kids that came to this event, including my dad. Almost a third of fathers also felt judged for not paying enough attention to children and an equal number said they were told they played too rough.

That was the last Father's Day I spent with my dad.

The same goes for criticism about being too rough or not paying attention. Fathers dedicate their lives for the well-being of their children.

Besides partners, grandparents were the next greatest dad critics (24%), followed by fathers' own friends (9%).

And in his success, my father remained steady - not letting the temptation of his new world get in the way of what he wanted in life - a happy family with a attractive wife (Mom, I know you are reading this) and happy children.
