Gujarat Remains on High Alert Even After Vayu Changes Course


The Chief Minister's Office in Gujarat said Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Chief Minister Vijay Rupani immediately after reaching Bishkek for the SCO Summit and inquired about the cyclone preparedness and assured all assistance and support from Centre to mitigate the effects of the storm.

Karachi Commissioner Iftikhar Shallwani on Wednesday chaired meeting to review arrangements before predicted cyclone approaching towards Karachi coast and directed all concerned authorities to prepare for expected winds or heat wave in the city.

Meanwhile, rain in Gujarat would see a declining trend from June 14 but few places would continue with heavy to very heavy rains. "To all our fishermen and coastal residents, we request you to move to safer places", Chauhan said.

Among the affected villages 258 were in Chhota Udepur district, 129 in Devbhoomi Dwarka, 189 in Gir Somnath, 105 in Jamnagar, 118 in Junagadh, 240 in Mahesana, 317 in Patan, 135 in Sabarkantha and 263 were in Surat district.

"Cyclone Vayu won't hit Gujarat". It will only skirt the coast.

The Indian Meteorological Department says that the thunderstorm and lightning along with the gusty winds have higher chances of occurring in the isolated districts of North Gujarat.

All ports in Gujarat halted the berthing of vessels from Wednesday.

Cyclone Vayu is presently centered at Latitude 20.3°N and Longitude 69.5°E over northeast and adjoining east-central Arabian Sea, about 130 km south-southwest of Diu, 90 km southwest of Veraval and 130 km almost south of Porbandar. According to the IMD, it moved north-northwestwards in the last six hours and is now 130 km southwest of Veraval in Gujarat and 180 km south of Porbandar.

Around 52 teams of the National Disaster Response Force and 11 columns (each having around 70 personnel) of the army have been deployed in the coastal districts of Gujarat.

Warships and aircraft of the Indian Navy have been kept standby as well.

Under the influence of this system, scattered Dust/Thunder-showers are expected in southeast Sindh (Thatta, Badin and Tharparkar districts) on Thursday-Friday.

"The cyclonic storm is going to hit Porbandar in Gujarat and other parts till Kutch area", he said. The moisture concentration and wind then converged around the cyclone leaving the south peninsula, that includes Telangana to become nearly dry.

However, the very severe Cyclone Vayu is going to stay put for at least 2 days over the area before dissipating in the sea only.

There has been no damage to any airport infrastructure or facilities has been reported so far.

The state government said it had begun moving about 300,000 people from the most vulnerable areas into shelters. Authorities in Gujarat have already evacuated three lakh people from low-lying areas near the coast.
