USA rewrite the record books with 13-0 win over Thailand

United States' Carli Lloyd right celebrates with teammates after Lloyd scored her third goal against Japan during the first half of the FIFA Women's World Cup soccer championship in Vancouver British Columbia

The US Women's National Team opened the World Cup on Tuesday with a 13-0 demolition of Thailand, marking the most goals in a single game and the most lopsided win in tournament history.

In 2018, they scored - well, nothing.

Saw of the most celebrate players in the world - the likes of Alex Morgan, Carli Lloyd and Megan Rapinoe - were joyously celebrating goals late in the game, scenes which irked some observers. Eastern. Prior to the start of the tournament, Alex Morgan emphasized the team did not feel any pressure despite the lofty expectations. Rose Lavelle quickly doubled USA's score by picking up the ball outside the area and driving toward goal.

Alex Morgan scored five goals as seven different US players got on the scoresheet against a team that was clearly overmatched.

The U.S. defeated Thailand in a tournament-record 13-0 victory.

But in the final group match before the knockout round, the Americans will face nemesis Sweden, who they've been grouped with six times in World Cup play.

In a postgame show of sportsmanship, the US team also consoled some of the emotional Thai players.

It reflects the fine line Federation Internationale de Football Association walks in trying to encourage growth and investment in the women's game by welcoming more nations onto its biggest stage, while keeping the competition credible.

"0.0 problem with the score line as this is THE tournament BUT celebrating goals (like #9) leaves a sour taste in my mouth like many of you".

Ahead of Tuesday's match, sports prognosticators had predicted that the US, as the defending tournament champions, would overwhelmingly defeat Thailand, according to USA Today.

USA coach Jill Ellis offered no apology afterward for the margin of victory and seemed puzzled by the line of questioning, noting that goal differential is among the criteria in World Cup advancement, as are such factors as confidence, camaraderie and getting off to a strong start.

Former England striker and current Juventus star Eniola Aluko also defender the Americans, saying that it's not their job to protect the pride of the Thailand team. Seven different players scored for the USA, with Morgan's five leading the way.

Samantha Mewis opened the floodgates five minutes after the break as the US made life miserable for the Thais by regularly finding the back of the net.

Thailand are not the only side facing up to the American behemoth.

US coach Jill Ellis also defended her team. I respect Thailand. I celebrate that they're here. However, Morgan was ruled offside, and the goal was taken off the board.
