Garcia was captured and beaten by a crowd of people at the bar after Sunday's shooting, according to Dominican National Police director Ney Aldrin Bautista Almonte.

His wife said that Ortiz, who was reportedly recovering from organ damage as a result of the shooting, underwent a second surgery upon arriving at the hospital on Monday night and took a "few steps" on Tuesday following the surgeries.

Ortiz spokesman Leo Lopez told The Associated Press on Tuesday that Ortiz is expected to stay in intensive care for at least 48 hours.

His father said he had no idea why someone would have shot his son.

Former Red Sox teammate Pedro Martinez called Ortiz a "strong man". Ortiz told police he does not know Feliz Garcia.

David Ortiz is one of the most celebrated and beloved members of the Red Sox family.

Big Papi and the 2013 Red Sox went on to win the World Series, earning them a trip to visit Obama in the White House in 2014, where Ortiz snapped a selfie with the then-president. In addition to Ortiz, two other people were wounded, including Jhoel Lopez, a Dominican TV host who was with the former player.

Dominican doctors removed Ortiz's gallbladder and part of his intestine. When the Red Sox won their third World Series title in nine years that fall, Ortiz was named the series MVP. Ortiz maintains a home in Weston, on the outskirts of Boston.
