One dead and six injured in Dallas crane collapse amid severe thunderstorms

Dallas Texas

A woman has been killed and at least six injured when a construction crane fell on an apartment building during a storm with high winds in the USA state of Texas.

"We're hoping that what we have at this point is where it ends [in terms of casualties]", said Mr Evans.

"It just sliced through the building. like a hot knife through butter", she said.

"It was like a sunny, lovely day and people were at the pool", she said.

The crane fell onto the Elan City Lights apartment complex, which left a large hole in the east side of the building and landed on an adjacent parking garage, CNN quoted Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesperson Jason Evans as saying.

Damage to units and vehicles could be seen.

The body of a woman, who was not identified by officials, was found inside the building after the collapse, fire officials said. Multiple resources, to include Fire Operations, Emergency Medical Services, Urban Search and Rescue and Hazardous Materials assets, were dispatched to the scene to help mitigate the situation following reports of multiple collapses resulting in multiple injuries.

Of those injured, two were listed in a critical condition, three had suffered serious injuries and one suffered minor injuries and was later discharged from a hospital.

Most of the crane collapses that have been dealt with, Evans said, involve the crane collapsing onto itself or onto a building that's vacant or under construction.

According to the National Weather Service, the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area and surrounding cities are under a severe thunderstorm watch.

Strong wind and damage were also reported in Collin and Rockwall counties, according to the weather service.

A powerful round of storms moved through North Texas on Sunday afternoon, causing roof damage, downed limbs and power outages across parts of the Dallas/Fort Worth area.
