Governor Cuomo confirms casualties in Midtown Manhattan helicopter crash

Mist and smoke covered the top of a building near 51st Street and 7th Avenue Monday in New York where a helicopter was reported to have crash landed

Cuomo said it shook the building. The area has been under a temporary flight restriction since his election in November 2016.

The helicopter pilot, who has not been identified, reportedly took off in bad weather and was not in touch with the tower at LaGuardia prior to the crash.

He said when alarms went off, security told people to evacuate the building via the stairs and not the elevators. The only indication was a helicopter had to do an emergency or a hard landing, or crashed onto the rooftop of the building, causing a fire.

"It's really unfortunate. I Just hope everyone's OK", he said. The fire department believes the fire is under control.

Governor Andrew Cuomo said preliminary investigation says that this may have been an emergency landing.

The FDNY said the helicopter crash-landed on the building.

The president has been briefed on the crash in Manhattan and is monitoring the situation, according to a White House official.

The AXA Equitable Center is more than 750 feet (229m) tall and was built in 1985. "The Trump Administration stands ready should you need anything at all". It appears as though the aircraft crashed into the office building's roof. Other tenants include BNP Paribas, Stifel, New Mountain Capital, Sidley Austin LLP, Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP, UBS, and Citigroup.

The building at that location was purchased by the California Public Employees' Retirement System for $1.9 billion in January 2016 with partner CommonWealth Partners of Los Angeles.

"There may have been casualties involved", he added.

"If you're a New Yorker, you have a level of PTSD from 9/11", he said. A sightseeing helicopter went down in New York City's East River in March 2018, killing five passengers.
