US, Mexico hammer out deal to avoid tariffs in migration row

Central American migrants cross the border between Ciudad Juarez Chihuahua State Mexico and El Paso Texas before being detained by US Customs and Border Patrol agents in May 2019

"I am pleased to inform you that The United States of America has reached a signed agreement with Mexico", Trump tweeted Friday.

But the two sides agree more action could be taken if within 90 days the measures do not have the desired result of drastically bringing down the numbers of undocumented migrants reaching the USA border from levels that are at a more-than-decade high.

An analysis published by the Brookings Institution last week said that the tariff would have proven costly, both for Mexico and the United States.

Pompeo is praising Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard after three days of negotiations.

The agreement appeared to fall short of a key US demand that Mexico accept a "safe third country" designation that would have forced it to permanently take in most Central American asylum seekers.

'Additionally, and for many years, Mexico was not being cooperative on the Border in things we had, or didn't have, and now I have full confidence, especially after speaking to their President yesterday, that they will be very cooperative and want to get the job properly done, ' he continued in the thread.

He also warned that Trump retained the authority to impose tariffs if Mexico failed to enforce the new agreement.

U.S. President Donald Trump had threatened to impose 5% import tariffs on all Mexican goods starting on Monday if Mexico did not commit to do more to tighten its borders.

And the US said Mexico is also taking "decisive action to dismantle human smuggling and trafficking organizations as well as their illicit financial and transportation networks". The Founding Fathers were nearly uniformly in favor of taxes on imports - tariffs - and while Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton disagreed on many things, they did agree that tariffs, wisely employed, were good for the country.

The acting secretary of Homeland Security on Sunday heralded Mexico's decision to send thousands of its national guard troops to the Guatemalan border as a new development, disputing a report that said the concession that averted new tariffs had been agreed upon months ago.

Lamy said he believed there was "absolutely no doubt" that the WTO would have found in favour of Mexico if Lopez Obrador had asked the trade body to arbitrate the tariff dispute with Trump, a process he said would have taken around two years for a definitive ruling.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said there was not much support for the Mexico tariffs, and he hoped that the tariffs would be avoided. "I mean, we've heard commitments before from Mexico to do more on their southern border". Bernie Sanders of Vermont, chastised Trump for using tariffs as a threat and operating a "trade policy based on tweets". Trump tweeted on Saturday.

Trump said on June 6 he would decide later this month whether to hit Beijing with tariffs on an additional list of $300 billion in Chinese goods.

Mexico President Andrés Manuel López Obrador says Mexico will not respond to US President Donald Trump's threat of coercive tariffs with desperation, but instead push for dialogue, during his daily press conference at the National Palace, in Mexico City, Mexico, May 31, 2019.

He telegraphed the breakthrough earlier on Friday when he also suggested that a deal with Mexico would include further concessions on trade, in addition to the ostensible objective relating to immigration.

Mejia said he fled the town of La Libertad, El Salvador, after members of the country's dominant gang, MS-13, told him to surrender his church to them to stash their weapons and drugs.
