Naomi Osaka stumbles out of French Open in 3rd round

Breaking news

Osaka, 21, lost 6-4 6-2 to the world number 42 in their third-round match.

In the men's singles draw, only one American advanced to the second round and that was Taylor Fritz of Rancho Santa Fe, CA, who beat Australian Bernard Tomic handily in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, 6-1 in first round action.

"So I think it's very much a fresh, clean slate from this match". So in this case, it helped me.

Osaka was beaten 6-4 6-2 by Katerina Siniakova as her quest to win a third grand slam in succession came to an end, while Williams fell to fellow American representative Sofia Kenin 6-2 7-5. And he said, like, we'll keep in touch. "Because I felt that way before, and it's not as extreme as that".

Since Melbourne, Williams had been unable to finish the three tournaments she entered - she retired to Garbine Muguruza in the third round of Indian Wells, withdrew after winning a round in Miami, and pulled out after winning one match on the Rome clay due to a right knee injury. I know that's because everything is sort of new.

Barty would have expected the win to earn her a meeting with Serena Williams in the fourth round and, if she somehow managed to negotiate that formidable hurdle, a date with world number one Naomi Osaka in the quarter-finals. Keys got 63 percent of her first serves in play and saved five of her seven break points.

Admitting she was still "pretty far away" from hitting her stride, the 23-time Grand Slam victor, who usually does not play in events ahead of the grass-court climax, said: "I'm definitely feeling short on matches, and just getting in the swing of things".

She added, "I would have expected to have gotten past the third round". I love the city, and I love the tournament. I could see that she's not so confident like she was. Yeah, I don't know what day it is. "It's been a grueling season".

Ashleigh Barty next plays Madison Keys, the American 14th seed. The German 5th rank defeated Serbian Dusan Lojovic 6-4, 6-2, 4-6, 1-6, 6-2 in a humdinger.

Serving for her first win over a world No. 1 at 5-2, Siniakova kept her nerve and won the match on Osaka's 38th error.

While Williams was being tested almost every time out, her surprise opponent in the final, Lucie Safarova, didn't drop a set over the two weeks-a run that included wins over Maria Sharapova and Ana Ivanovic, two members of the top 10, along the way.

When someone asked about going from an 18-year-old opponent in Swiatek to Anisimova, Halep's initial reply was: "I feel old". Keys beat Barty in the round of 128 at the 2017 French Open.

Two other US women also will be aiming to join Sloane Stephens in the quarterfinals: Amanda Anisimova, 17, and Madison Keys, 24. Stephens, the seventh seed, meanwhile will face Spain's Garbine Muguruza, the 19th seed, and two-time major champion on Sunday.
