Mac Pro modular system in detail

James Martin CNET

The new Mac Pro design is a major redesign, ditching the all-in-one stylings of the iMac Pro and moving past the cylindrical design of the 2013 Mac Pro.

But as impressive as it sounds, there's just something about the way the Mac Pro looks that freaks us out. And, to these people the time that the Mac Pro will save in rendering projects will be invaluable, and the huge price tag will easily pay for itself in time. The capability automatically builds fundamental features into Mac versions of apps so that developers only need to put on the "finishing touches" in many cases, Apple said.

Inside that cheese-grater housing are an Intel Xeon 28-core processor plus room to upgrade system memory and PCI expansion. It is also equipped with a six-channel memory architecture and 12 physical DIMM slots, allowing for up to 1.5TB of memory. (That's not a typo). It also introduces Apple Afterburner, a game-changing accelerator card that enables playback of three streams of 8K ProRes RAW video simultaneously. This programmable ASIC has the power to decode up to 6.3 billion pixels per second.

All of this runs on a 1.4kW power supply, which is, again, a ton. Yeah. If you're a FruitCo devotee, keep your eyes out this Fall, when the new Mac Pro becomes available.

The Mac Pro will start at $US5,999 for an eight-core Intel Xeon processor, 32 GB of RAM, an AMD Radeon 580X graphics card, and a 256 GB SSD.

The Mac Pro is definitely the most powerful desktop Apple has ever made, but the new monitor created to accompany it is just as impressive.

While Apple has announced the starting price of this mammoth of a device (again, ₹4 lakh), the price of the top-of-the-line model (which can have different levels of ostentation, given you can plug in up to four XDR monitors whose stands cost $1,000 a pop) hasn't been announced.

The Mac Pro will start at $5,999 with the Pro Display XDR starting at $4,999.

The Pro Display XDR is bright too, with 1600 nits of brightness at its peak and the ability to sustain 1000 nits indefinitely. For colour reproduction this display offers a true 10-bit colour depth and P3 wide gamut.

It's been nearly eight years since we saw the release of a new Mac Pro design, and this year's announcement of the third-generation Mac Pro at WWDC 2019 was definitely meant to be exciting. There are holes covering the entire front and back of the Mac Pro's aluminum chassis and holes all along the backside of the Pro Display XDR. The standard glass configuration will cost $4,999, and the nano-etched model is $5,999. But you'll have to pay $999.

The monitors can also be rotated so that they can displayed in portrait as opposed to landscape.

The stand will cost you an extra $1,000.
