MacKenzie Bezos Pledges To Donate Half Of Her $36 Billion Fortune

Meanwhile, her ex-husband Jeff Bezos, the world's richest person, now has an estimated net worth of $114 billion - and he has not signed the Giving Pledge.

Fulfilling the requirements of the pledge can be tricky in a world where the wealthiest are accruing more riches than ever.

"In addition to whatever assets life has nurtured in me, I have a disproportionate amount of money to share", she said in a statement.

In an open letter declaring her decision, Mackenzie Bezos said: "I have no doubt that tremendous value comes when people act quickly on the impulse to give". It will take time and effort and care.

Jeff Bezos, the world's richest person, hasn't signed the pledge and was criticized for his relatively restrained philanthropic efforts to date. In September, he and MacKenzie Bezos also gave $10 million to the veteran-focused super PAC With Honor, marking their first major political venture. Earlier today, his ex-wife, Mackenzie Bezos, who received half of the Amazon fortune, signed off of the Giving Pledge. Her letter is so handsome.

Mr Bezos has credited Ms Bezos for her support when they moved from NY to Seattle so he could launch the online bookseller that grew into one of the world's largest retailers. But I won't wait.

The Giving Pledge, while a nice idea, is exactly what it claims to be: a pledge, as opposed to a contract or legal obligation. "And I will keep at it until the safe is empty", Bezos said in a letter on the organization's website.

"A January Wired article took on the myth of the "lone genius" and the sexism present in the conversation around the Bezos" divorce. Last fall, for example, a few months before Jeff and MacKenzie Bezos announced they were separating, the couple made a commitment of $2 billion to launch an initiative aimed at helping homeless families and creating preschools in low-income communities. It was founded by Bill and Melinda Gates and Warren Buffett in 2010 and now has 204 participants from 23 countries. The group of signatories also included the co-founder of WhatsApp, Brian Acton, the co-founder of Pinterest, Paul Sciarra, and the CEO of the cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, Brian Armstrong.
