Trump awaited another honour Monday when he was to become the first foreign leader to meet with Japan's new emperor, Naruhito, since he ascended to the throne on May 1.

Trump and Abe are expected to discuss trade during talks on Monday, but officials have played down the possibility of a deal during the visit.

The president's first event after arriving in Tokyo was a reception with several dozen Japanese and American business leaders at the USA ambassador's residence. In April Japan's trade surplus surged nearly 18% to 723 billion yen ($6.6 billion).

During remarks to business leaders on Saturday night, Trump ribbed Japan over its trading "edge" while saying progress had been made. The U.S. has also deployed B-52 bombers and an aircraft carrier to the region.

Under a cloudless sky with sizzling temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit), the two world leaders hit the fairway at the Mobara Country Club course in Chiba, just outside the capital.

As he opened a four-day visit that will focus on security, diplomacy and trade - and is filled with flourishes created to please Mr. Trump and highlight the close ties between the two leaders - the president appeared to risk ratcheting up Japanese anxiety that any nuclear agreement with North Korea could neglect their concerns.
