Fired Baylor coach Briles lands Texas HS job

Baylor University head coach Art Briles reacts against the University of Oklahoma in the first half of their NCAA Big 12 football game at Floyd Casey Stadium in Waco Texas United States

Once one of the hottest college coaching properties in the country after leading longtime Big 12 doormat Baylor to two consecutive conference titles in 2014 and '15, Briles fell quickly.

Former Baylor head coach Art Briles is the new head coach at Mount Vernon High School according to the school Friday evening. He said Briles meets the Interscholastic League's coaching eligibility standards.

During the scandal in 2016, reports surfaced that indicated Baylor officials, including coaches, knew about numerous incidents, and most players didn't face disciplinary actions. During a Skype session with Briles, who is now coaching club football in Italy, and current Mount Vernon players and fans, superintendent of schools Jason McCullough said the school board voted 7-0 to hire Briles.

"I began my coaching career in the Friday night lights of Texas high school football, and I'm looking forward to returning to my roots", said Briles.

Briles had also been considered for a job with the Dallas Cowboys and a coaching vacancy at Waco High School.

Briles was formerly the head football coach at Baylor until his dismissal in 2016 amid the sex assault scandal.

Briles was introduced via Skype on Friday night to a room full of Mount Vernon staff, community members and almost 15 football players who all seemed extremely excited about their new coach. He is passionate about investing in the lives of young people and helping them to succeed both on the field and in life. As a coach it's my first love.

"After a through due diligence process and several earnest conversations, we believe our students will benefit greatly from his skills and experience", said Dr. Jason McCullough, the Superintendent at Mount Vernon ISD. The investigation team reported that 19 football players had sexually assaulted at least 17 women during while Briles was head coach, with a lawsuit alleging 52 rapes occurring during that time period.

Baylor is still waiting for the outcome of an NCAA investigation into the school's conduct.

Briles won four state championships at Stephenville in the 1990s, the last in 1999 before joining Mike Leach at Texas Tech. "I have observed him as a man, husband, father, grandfather, and as a coach, always forthright and stellar", said Teaff.
