'His Dark Materials' Trailer: James McAvoy in HBO's Epic Fantasy Series

Evil is on the Move in New His Dark Materials Trailer

It's been some time since we got an update about HBO's new fantasy series His Dark Materials.

HBO's synopsis for the show teases "The first season follows Lyra (Dafne Keen), a seemingly ordinary but courageous young woman from another world".

"You once asked me what evil is", McAvoy's Lord Asriel says to Dafne Keen's headstrong protagonist Lyra Belacqua, who, in the first season of His Dark Materials, embarks on a quest to the Arctic after her friend gets captured by a sinister child-napping organization.

His Dark Materials stars Dafne Keen (Logan) as Lyra, the brilliant Ruth Wilson (Luther) as Marisa Coulter, Clarke Peters (The Wire) as Dr. Carne, the one and only Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton) as Lee Scoresby, and James McAvoy (a whole bunch of films) as Lord Asriel.

HBO is likely hoping His Dark Materials will attract the same audience that has turned its fantasy series Game of Thrones into a cultural phenomenon. The first season consists of eight episodes and a second, eight-episode season has also been ordered already.

HBO didn't disclose when the show would be premiering in their His Dark Materials trailer, though we do know it's slated to debut at some point this year. Screenwriter and playwright Jack Thorne (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, This Is England '88) has adapted the books for television, whilst Tom Hooper (The King's Speech), Dawn Shadforth and Otto Bathurst (Peaky Blinders) will be sharing the directorial duties. Said trilogy is comprised of 1995's Northern Lights (The Golden Compass in North America), 1997's The Subtle Knife and 2000's The Amber Spyglass.

May seem far-fetched if you're not familiar with them, but the books have been hugely popular since they were first published - so much so, a film adaptation of The Golden Compass was released in 2007, but it received mixed reviews and didn't meet the studio's expectations at the box office.

When the glamorous and mesmeric Mrs. Coulter (Ruth Wilson) enters Lyra's life, she embarks upon a unsafe journey of discovery from Oxford to London.
