Putin urging Iran to stick to nuclear deal - Newswatch

Sergey Lavrov welcomes U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo for the talks in the Black Sea resort city of Sochi Russia

The United States and Russian Federation are on opposite sides of Syria's brutal eight-year civil war, with Russian Federation the primary backer of President Bashar Assad.

Yesterday, US President Donald Trump also tried to dampen the winds of war, denying a New York Times report that he is studying the dispatch of 120,000 troops to the Middle East in the event of an Iranian threat. "For our part, we have repeatedly said that we would also like to restore full-format relations". "Still, that was one of the reasons for the certain break in our inter-state ties", he said. "I hope that, today, the situation is changing". Mueller's team ultimately concluded that the evidence did not establish such a conspiracy.

A Kremlin spokesman later said Putin would be open to a new meeting with Trump. Earlier, though, Pompeo made clear that any repeat of the 2016 meddling would not be tolerated.

"They have chosen poorly by focusing on threats", Hook said, referring to Pompeo's scheduled visit to Russian Federation on Tuesday for meetings with President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. "I'd encourage them not to do that".

"We would not tolerate that", he added. Putin said he hopes the conditions now exist to fully restore relations now that the Mueller investigation is over. "We have differences and each country will protect its own interests, look out for its own interests of its people".

Pompeo meanwhile said he had urged Lavrov to end Russia's support for Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. Pompeo said in the news conference that Trump remains interested in bringing other countries, including China, into an arms-control framework - an idea that has drawn skepticism in Moscow. He cited cooperation in Afghanistan and counterterrorism more broadly, but also a shared goal of getting North Korea to abandon nuclear weapons. While both Mr Trump and Mr Putin want significantly better ties, this may prove unobtainable, not least given the growing closeness of Moscow's relationship with Beijing under Mr Xi.

Ties between the two countries have been damaged by allegations - denied by Moscow - that Russian Federation tried to influence the results of the 2016 United States presidential election, and by differences over Iran, Syria, Ukraine and Venezuela. The U.S. has urged Russian Federation to end escalating airstrikes in the province of Idlib, while Moscow insists its role there is limited. "We want every country that's interfering in Venezuela to cease doing that".

European leaders agree with the United States that Iran's developing ballistic missile program and its belligerent behavior in its region and are problematic. Washington has accused Iran of planning "imminent" attacks in the region and on Wednesday, the United States ordered all non-emergency staff to leave its embassy in the Iraqi capital Baghdad and consulate in Arbil.

The statement came a few days after the USA administration renewed five of seven sanctions waivers that allow Russian Federation and European nations to conduct civilian nuclear cooperation with Iran but revoked the other two as part of its pressure campaign against Tehran.

"We fundamentally do not seek war with Iran, " Pompeo said. For while the Mueller report cleared the president of "collusion" with the Kremlin, it made clear that Moscow made significant and sustained efforts to influence the outcome of the 2016 U.S. presidential election against Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, and that this threat to United States interests is ongoing.
