PGA CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW: Happy hour for PGA of America

Bethpage Black has been afforded the ideal storm: Woods, in his first start since winning in such epic scenes at Augusta National, will chase his fifth US PGA Championship's Wanamaker Trophy, and his first since 2007, from Thursday. He's 43 years old.

When Tiger Woods won the Masters Tournament on April 14, President Trump declared he was going to award him the Presidential Medal of Freedom and ordered his aides to schedule the event as soon as possible.

Tiger Woods seemed to have risen from the dead to win a Masters title after he was ruled out by nearly everyone.

Adducci said that he had good reason to believe that Tiger could continue his comeback by winning the next three majors. The unheralded South Korean capitalised on a strangely poor display from Woods and captured first place on the back nine.

To have any chance for a fifth PGA Championship title, Woods will need to be much sharper off the tee than he was at Augusta, where he was 44 in driving accuracy.

The Black Course at Bethpage will host this years PGA Championship for the first time. I'm not very competitive in practice rounds.

The approach of the PGA of America to setting up the course will be fascinating.

"Everybody thinks we're going to get knee-high rough", Nantz said. "Your spectacular achievements on the golf course, your triumph over physical adversity and your relentless will to win, win, win; these qualities embody the American spirit of pushing boundaries, defying limits and always striving for greatness".

Woods was expected to participate in the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow in May but skipped the tournament.

Tiger is now first on the PGA Tour in greens in regulation.

"It was pretty up and down and some lean times, but again, I don't know of anybody that's played this game for a long time that hasn't gone through some ups and downs".

Both U.S. Opens played there (2002 and 2009) were won in red figures (3 and 4 under par), and in the two stagings at Bethpage of the PGA Tour's playoff event, The Barclays, the winning scores were 9 and 10 under.

There's a reason it has a sign posted on the first tee that says, "Warning: The Black Course is an extremely hard course which is recommended only for highly skilled golfers".

Elsewhere, Rickie Fowler has played well during the early months of the year yet remains the best current golfer still to win a major.

Two days later, Woods spent five hours playing all 18 holes at Bethpage Black. He is winless on the year, but has finished in the top 10 in four tournaments. In fact, I don't think Tiger could have won the first few majors of 2018.

Pepperell, who yesterday moved up to his equal-highest world ranking at No 33, has a unique take on pre-tournament reconnaissance and does not see why he should make an exception for the Majors.

His first Masters win came at the age of 21, when he celebrated with his father, Earl, who died in 2006. Spring often brings more wind than summer and with rain this past weekend and potentially more in the forecast, the long course will play even longer and the rough will play even nastier.
