North Korea fires unidentified projectile, claims South

The South's Joint Chiefs of Staff had no other immediate details of Thursday's launch

It said it is working with the United States to determine more details, such as the types of weapons that were fired.

People watch a TV showing file footage of North Korea's missile launch during a news program at the Seoul Railway Station in Seoul, South Korea, Thursday, May 9, 2019.

A North Korean long-range rocket is launched into the air at the Sohae rocket launch site, North Korea, in this photo released by Kyodo, on February 7, 2016.

Since then Kim has said the North would not test nuclear devices or ICBMs but diplomacy has stalled in recent weeks. North Korea fired two suspected short-range missiles toward the sea on Thursday, South Korean officials said, its second weapons launch in five days and a possible warning that nuclear disarmament talks with Washington could be in danger.

In related development, US President Donald Trump said US authorities were looking "very seriously" at the launch of the "short-range missiles". CNN, however, reported that one was sacked from Sino-ri, which is also located in the northwestern portion of the country.

The president also praised "the leadership of Chairman Kim" and said once a nuclear deal is completed and sanctions are removed North Korea will become "one of the most successful nations of the world".

Mr Schiller said short of actually procuring the missiles from Russia, Pyongyang could have had key parts delivered from a third country while making components such as the outer shell, or airframe, domestically.

"North Korea, of course, stated that it would not look at the sanctions, and, when it announced a moratorium on missile launches, spoke only of medium and long-range missiles and not short-range ones, therefore, it [can] say that it didn't violate the terms of talks by launching Scud".

South Korean President Moon Jae-in warned Kim his actions risk "throwing cold water" on negotiations.

"The relationship continues. I know they want to negotiate, they're talking about negotiating".

"We'll push for sending food to North Korean citizens in cooperation with the global community", said Lee Sang-min, spokesman for the Ministry of Unification on North Korean affairs.

North Korea has also withdrawn from talks about its nuclear program with the US since a meeting in Vietnam. The sanctions have created economic difficulties for North Korea.

"But at this point no", he stressed, calling the tests "very standard stuff".

The missiles were short-range and the launches do not mean Kim has made a decision to end his self-imposed moratorium on testing long-range missiles that could reach the United States mainland.

In addition, North Korea's latest launches, apparently, are aimed at negotiating a suspension of the joint US-South Korean military exercises, which Pyongyang considers a threat, during the inter-Korean and US-North Korean dialogue.

North Korea lashed out at the United States and South Korea this week, saying last weekend's launches were "regular and self-defensive".

"The government's expectations that food aid will help resume the US-North Korea denuclearization negotiations are too high".

The two missiles were fired from the northwest of Kusong, in an easterly direction, the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the ROK said in a statement.

North Korea also tested several short-range missiles on Saturday May 4. Experts think North Korea still needs more tests to make its ICBMs viable.
