Protester tosses egg at Aussie PM

Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Opposition leader Bill Shorten shake hands before the leaders debate. But are debates still relevant

A 25-year-old woman has been arrested following an egg attack on Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison during an election campaign event in Albury, New South Wales.

His teen attacker had been protesting comments Anning made blaming the massacre of 51 Muslim worshippers in two Christchurch mosques on immigrants to New Zealand.

Security guards pounced on the protester, who was wearing a beanie and casual clothes, and dragged her away moments after the attack. Police say the egg missed the Prime Minister, who flinched.

That time, yolk dripped down the back of Anning's closely shaved head as a number of his supporters tackled the egg assailant and held him to the floor.

The 24-year-old protester hit the top of Mr Morrison's head with the egg, but it bounced off.

"We have a female in custody in relation to an incident involving the prime minister this morning", police inspector Scott Russell told reporters at a press conference in Albury, adding that inquiries were continuing.

"My concern about today's incident in Albury was for the older lady who was knocked off her feet", he wrote.

CWA member Margaret Baxter was also bowled over in the kerfuffle, with Mr Morrison acknowledging her toughness after she found her feet.

"Our farmers have to put up with these same idiots who are invading their farms and their homes", Morrison wrote. "No injuries have been reported".

It was not yet clear whether she would be charged.

Morrison called for more civility in the election campaign.

His conservative government narrowly trails the main opposition Labor party in opinion polls ahead of the May 18 election. Connolly, for his part, was given an "official caution". In another statement, cited by ABC, law enforcement said that the egg, intended for Morrison, hit one of the women next to the PM.

The protester, who did not identify herself, described throwing the egg as "the most harmless thing you can do".
