UNC Charlotte on Lockdown, Multiple People Reportedly Shot (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

Multiple police officers rush campus of UNC-Charlotte following shooting

Tuesday was the last day of classes for the academic year, according to AFP.

On Wednesday night, thousands of students and others thronged the school's basketball arena for a campus vigil. "Someone said 'School shooter! I want that to be his legacy, that he lost his life to protect those he cared about", the sophomore said about his friend. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Kerr Putney said Howell's actions likely saved the lives of other students. He was arrested minutes after he started shooting.

The campus police chief said the suspect had not appeared on their radar as a potential threat.

Baker said Tuesday that two people were dead and three more in critical condition following the shooting.

Two others have life-threatening injuries and another two have injuries that are not life-threatening. A sixth victim was being treated with non-life-threatening injuries, he said.

According to its website the University of North Carolina at Charlotte enrolls more than 26,500 students and employees 3,000 faculty and staff.

Twenty-two-year-old Trystan Terrell faces two counts of murder, four counts of attempted murder, four counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, possession of a firearm on education property and discharging a firearm on education property.

Authorities offered no explanation for a motive and said they believed Terrell, who withdrew from UNC Charlotte earlier this semester, acted alone.

In the tumult, Le said he hopped into the vehicle of someone he didn't know who was parked nearby, joining three others who were in tears.

"I would tell you, he stood out", Smith said. "This is not in his DNA".

Monifa Drayton, an assistant vice president at Atrium Health, told CNN affiliate WBTV that she was walking into the building to teach a class when gunfire rang out.

"It's the worst feeling when that text comes", she said. "And so, whatever I could do to help any child to safety, that's what I was going to do".

During a press conference Tuesday evening, campus police said once they got reports of the suspect armed with a pistol - with several students shot - multiple officers immediately went into the building, disarmed the suspect and took him into custody. "We're torn up about what's happened", she said.

⚠️ALERT⚠️UNC Charlotte Students and families, please head to 8600 University City Boulevard.

Howell, who was the "first and foremost hero" on Tuesday, did exactly what law enforcement recommend people do in an active shooter situation, Putney said. They say he's in custody with charges pending.

Susan Harden, an UNCC professor and Mecklenburg County Commissioner, was at home when she heard of the shooting.

Harden said she has taught inside the Kennedy building, where the shootings happened.

"It breaks my heart".

"What happened yesterday can not happen again", Crean said.
