The other student killed in the shooting was Ellis Parlier, 19, officials said.

Local news station WCNC reports two men have been identified as the victims and there was only one shooter who is now in custody. It happened just before a free concert and a basketball game were about to start.

"Our officers' actions definitely saved lives", Baker said at a news conference.

The campus remained on lockdown for hours as a familiar scene replayed at the latest shooting in the United States. A sixth victim was being treated with non-life-threatening injuries, he said.

In a news release, UNC-Charlotte said all the victims were students, five from North Carolina and one global.

UNC Charlotte is North Carolina's urban research university.

Officers entered the building where the suspect was armed with a handgun, Baker said.

"A student should not have to fear for his or her life when they are on our campuses", Gov. Roy Cooper told reporters.

One person is in custody, a city official said. A motive for the shooting is still unclear. "My students are so special to me and I am devastated", Johnson wrote. So safe. I've never felt unsafe on our campus.

Twenty-two-year-old Trystan Terrell faces two counts of murder, four counts of attempted murder, four counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, possession of a firearm on education property and discharging a firearm on education property.

Police sources told WBTV two people were killed.

"This is not in his DNA", Paul Rold of Arlington, Texas, said.

According to its website, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte enrolled more than 26,500 students and employed 3000 faculty and staff.

CMPD says it was called to the campus at 5:42 p.m. Tuesday about an "active shooter on South Library Lane in the Kennedy Building".

Other students took shelter as the alerts were coming out.

Susan Harden, an UNCC professor and Mecklenburg County Commissioner, was at home when she heard of the shooting. She said she was in shock to hear the frightful news.

"It breaks my heart. In fact it was just in October that we had a full live drill, surrounding standing up a family assistance center, in case we had a mass casualty event on the campus", Dubois said.

It was not immediately clear which part of the school the shooter targeted.

Pescaro is a student at UNC Charlotte and is originally from Rutland, Massachusetts, according to his Facebook page. "Among those unknowns is how we will navigate the remainder of the semester, including the final examination schedule and graduation", he said.
