Those covered by the quarantine were singled out based on their possible exposure to either an infected UCLA student who had attended classes in two buildings on three days earlier this month, or a person with measles who visited a Cal State-LA library on April 11, officials said.
Los Angeles County public health officials issued quarantines of 24 to 48 hours until proof of immunity is established, officials said.
As of this morning, only one student remained quarantined on campus according to a Twitter update issued by the UCLA Newsroom. "We have arranged for those who live on campus to be cared for at UCLA while they are quarantined", UCLA said in a statement.
NATHAN ROTT, BYLINE: At the University of California, Los Angeles, better known as UCLA, there is little outward indication that a health scare is even going on.
This comes after authorities declared a measles outbreak in Los Angeles County earlier this week. If they did not have record of a vaccination, individuals were urged to visit the Student Health Center for a blood test to determine if they had immunity to measles or would need a vaccine. Nineteen years and a burgeoning "anti-vax" movement later, and the country is experiencing the worst outbreak of the virus since its elimination.
The states with reported cases this year are: Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Texas, Tennessee, and Washington.
At Cal State LA, school officials said there may have been measles exposure at the Library North Library on April 11, between 11 am and 3 pm.
That number was later reduced to 156 people, the Department of Public Health said in an email on Thursday, and the quarantine will end in a week.
California has confirmed 38 cases, state health officials have said. Fourteen of those infected had traveled overseas to countries including the Philippines, Thailand, India and Ukraine.
This year, California's cases stretch across 11 counties and affect patients from 5 months old to 55. The symptoms of measles can include fever, cough, runny nose, watery eyes, and a rash of red spots. However, a very small fraction of those infected can suffer complications such as pneumonia and a unsafe swelling of the brain.
The vaccine, which became available in the 1960s, is considered safe and effective, and because of it, measles was declared all but eliminated in the USA in 2000. The university learned of the measles case on Monday and began precautionary measures, CNN reported.
