Cyprus slayings: Lake searched for bodies in suitcases

Cyprus Army officer admits to murdering seven people | Kathimerini

Greek Cypriot authorities on April 25 uncovered another body in a widening probe into the murders of foreign women and girls after a suspected serial killer confessed to seven killings, police sources said.

Nikos Metaxas, 35, is being held on suspicion of murder after providing information linking him to the bodies of three women, including that of an unidentified victim found yesterday at a shooting range outside the capital, Nicosia.

Cypriot investigators and police search a flooded mineshaft where two female bodies were found, outside Mister village near the capital Nicosia, Cyprus, Monday, April 22, 2019.

Tiburcio and her 6-year-old daughter had been missing since May of last year.

The Philippine government is now monitoring the progress in the ongoing investigation on the murder of three Filipinas in Cyprus.

Although the Embassy did not immediately release the names of the three Filipina victims, the state-run Cyprus News Agency identified one of the alleged Filipina victims as 31-year-old Maricar Valtez Arquiola.

Police in Cyprus are searching a man-made lake for suitcases in which an army officer, who confessed to killing seven foreign women and girls, said he stuffed the bodies of some of his victims. Police on the east Mediterranean island nation, along with the help of the fire service, are conducting the search Monday in the wake of last week's discovery of the bodies in the abandoned mineshaft and the disappearance of the six year-old daughter of one of the victims.

During the Thursday interrogation that produced four more potential victims, the suspect provided directions to a military firing range where police found decomposed remains in a pit within hours. The suspect initially denied killing Arquiola but reversed himself after a court hearing Thursday, a police official said.

Six days later, the body of another Asian-looking woman was found in the same area. He told private TV station Sigma that Cypriot lawmakers turned down a police request past year for a law that would authorize law enforcement officers to access the personal data of missing persons.

The suspect has not been named because he has not been charged yet.

"Such instincts are contrary to our culture's traditions and values", Anastasiades said in a statement from China, where he was on an official visit.

Chargé d'Affaires Judy Barbara Robianes said the embassy has reported the cases of the missing Filipinas to Cypriot authorities and have continuously followed up with them on those cases. The country has 80 unsolved missing person cases, going back to 1990.

Officers have said they will investigate any perceived shortcomings in their handling of the case.

Five British law enforcement officials - including a coroner, a psychiatrist and investigators who specialize in multiple homicides - were coming in to help with the investigation.

"So we are searching step-by-step with divers", the fire chief's spokesman Andreas Kettis told AFP.
