Jeremy Hunt: Next Tory leader must be a Brexit believer… like me

Theresa May and her husband Philip May leave after attending their local church service on Easter Sunday

"We need to leave with a deal and we've put the deal to Parliament three times now but unfortunately Parliament has not been able to agree that deal", Hammond said.

Mr Hunt was speaking as pressure mounted on Mrs May to name a date to quit as Prime Minister, after an influential committee of backbenchers demanded "clarity" over what she will do if her European Union withdrawal deal fails.

Widdecombe stressed that she would still vote for the Conservatives in upcoming local elections but would stand for the Brexit Party in the European Union elections in order to ensure Brexit is delivered.

A number of parties have begun launching their campaigns for the European Parliamentary elections after Theresa May agreed a Brexit delay until 31 October with the EU.

Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon's renewed push for secession from the United Kingdom faces several hurdles if her nationalist party's dream of independence is to come true, analysts said on Thursday.

Under current party rules, MPs can not mount a fresh challenge against Mrs May until December - 12 months after the last failed no confidence vote in her. But with one month to go, few are expecting a consensus to emerge and May's office on Tuesday said talks had been "difficult in some areas, such as in relation to the timetable for the negotiations".

Brady told journalists after the meeting that the decision was the result of two lengthy meetings and good full and constructive debates, in a friendly and collegiate way.

"We further determined that we should remind colleagues that it is always available to them to write to me as chairman of the 1922 Committee raising concerns or setting out their thoughts - including concerns about the leadership of the party - and that the strength of opinion would be communicated by me to the leader of the party should they decide to do so". She is now seeking to reach a compromise with the opposition Labour Party on a way forward.

A war hero, a former communist, a food millionaire and a NHS worker were today unveiled by Nigel Farage as candidates for his Brexit Party in the European elections.

The former shadow home secretary, 71, served as a Tory MP for over a decade before retiring in 2010.

But Mr Hunt declined to reveal whether he would stand for the leadership when Mrs May stands down, saying only: "Wait and see".

"This is about how the world views us. We will grow from there if Parliament doesn't listen, doesn't deliver, we will then grow".

Continued talks on Thursday were expected to cover environmental issues.
