1.5 million people to be affected by Cyclone Kenneth

China to build houses for Cyclone Idai victims

Ahead of Kenneth's arrival, evacuations have also been ordered in coastal areas of neighbouring Tanzania.

Kenneth will likely linger over land, wringing itself out as it weakens and possibly dropping as much as 61cm of rain, Mr Jeff Masters, the founder of Weather Underground, an IBM company, said in a blog post.

Cyclone Kenneth, now a powerful Category 4 storm, is expected to hit a different, northern part of the African nation late Thursday (local time).

The Tanzania Meteorological Agency (TMA) said the storm would make landfall in Tanzania and Mozambique after it was spotted in the north western parts of Madagascar travelling at the speed of 160 km/hr, as reported by the East African.

So it seems to be more intense than Idai. Considering that the eye of Kenneth is forecast to pass 100-150km to the north of Pemba, the port city and surrounding coastal areas will face the unsafe storm surge tonight, which will push vast amounts of ocean water into Pemba Bay and further inland. "We've done everything we were told to", a hotel owner in the small town of Mucojo, which is projected to be close to the eye of the cyclone, told AFP. Three people were killed in the storm and several others injured, said President Azali Assoumani in a news conference.

Worldwide energy companies such as Exxon Mobil have been developing huge natural gas fields off the coast of northern Mozambique.

The storm is expected bring 1m (3.2ft) of rain to some areas of Mozambique - with storm surges expected of 3-5m in places.

In neighbouring Zimbabwe, where hundreds died in heavy rains following Cyclone Idai, the civil protection department sent out a warning that some areas near the eastern border with Mozambique could be affected by the cyclone.

Cyclone Idai's effects will be felt for months, if not years.

Residents in coastal areas have been ordered to evacuate and move to higher ground, according to the National Directorate for the Management of Water Resources.

Nevertheless, INAM is gathering more concise information about the system in order to alert cooperation partners about possible responses to be initiated in the Northern part of Cabo Delgado.

More than 900 people died when the storm brought devastation to Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe.

The north coast based, IPSS Medical Rescue and Rescue South Africa are expected to depart from Joburg by tomorrow morning - and are to meet with rescuers from the South African government on arrival in Pemba.
