Valverde: Still work to do in title race

Barcelona’s Philippe Coutinho was accused of making a controversial gesture

Barca will lift the trophy if they beat Alaves on Tuesday night and Levante on Saturday, although they could wrap up the title on Wednesday if Atletico Madrid lose at home to Valencia.

Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde warned his side still have work to do to defend their LaLiga title despite boasting a nine-point lead with five games to go.

Barcelona will face Liverpool in the upcoming Champions League semi-finals.

The visitors put up a stiff defense in the first half, but were undone by Clement Lenglet's header on the stroke of halftime and although Juanmi leveled the score in the 62nd minute following a pass from Mikel Merino, Jordi Alba put Barca back in front nearly immediately afterwards with a right foot shot.

Lionel Messi was brilliant for the goal as he found Jordi Alba with a flawless through ball.

Barcelona stumbled out of the blocks this season but they are now tearing down the home straight.

Barcelona relied on goals from Clement Lenglet and Jordi Alba to secure all three points against Sociedad and the pair are likely to start again.

They stifled Barca by sitting deep and outnumbering them in midfield and they should have taken the lead when Juanmi got a clear sight of goal, but he was denied by Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Willian Jose ballooned the rebound over the bar.

There was nothing complicated about Lenglet's opener, the Frenchman rising high above two defenders and heading into the corner for his first league goal in a Barcelona shirt.

They did not completely dominate possession of the ball during the 90 minutes. The defender jinked inside and drove a shot into the far corner.

Nearest rivals Atletico Madrid are in action on Saturday as well, taking on Eibar as they look to keep their title hopes alive with just six games left in the campaign.

It's been a rough second half of the season for this team, which at one point was in contention for a top-four finish.

"Last year we were top with a big advantage and this year it is the same".

They initially cut frustrated figures throughout an opening period of few chances, with the Bernabeu crowd voicing their frustration.
