Car2go suspends all service in Chicago due to ‘fraud issue’

Oh yes way better

The Chicago Car2Go fleet started out with Smart ForTwo cars and bigger Mercedes-Benz CLA/GLA models; we can imagine the ForTwos are a touch slight for any ram raiding, but an escape auto that can vanish in a crowd of other shared Smart cars seems handy for misuse.

"The Chicago Police Department was alerted by a auto rental company that some of their vehicles may have been rented by deceptive or fraudulent means through a mobile app".

On Wednesday, April 17, Daimler announced some of the vehicles in its Chicago Car2Go fleet were rented fraudulently.

The software biz, auto 2 Go, confirmed on Wednesday it is working with the cops after some of its cars went missing and, in some cases, were used in connection with other crimes. It sounds like thieves were more interested in the Mercedes compacts than in the diminutive Smart. The Chicago Police Department is working with the company to determine whether there any other vehicles whose locations can not be accounted for. Most of the recovered vehicles were found on the West Side. No one has confirmed the exact number of missing cars, however.

Share Now is the world's largest car-sharing company, providing a variety of vehicles - from tiny Smart cars, which seat two, to luxury vehicles from Mercedes-Benz and BMW. He added that 12 people are in custody, but The Verge learned that number has since grown to 16. It stressed that its app "wasn't hacked" and that that the perpetrators hadn't obtained sensitive member data.

The company tweeted: 'Clarification: We were not hacked. In a statement, car2go said they are "currently working with law enforcement to neutralize a fraud issue in Chicago". None of our member's personal or confidential information has been compromised.

There's no word yet on when Car2Go will resume.

As reported by CBS Chicago, the short-term rental vehicle service has temporarily revoked its services in Chicago where the alleged scheme took place.

'No other SHARE NOW North American market has been affected'.
