Monfries, a journalism student, had been set to graduate in May and was allegedly participating in a rite of passage many Fordham University students undertake prior to graduating when she fell on Sunday morning.
Police said Monfries and her friends snuck into the Keating Clock Tower around 3 a.m. Sunday and were going to try to climb to the top.
"There are no words sufficient to describe the loss of someone so young and full of promise - and mere weeks from graduation", he wrote.

Fordham University confirmed the incident and sent a letter to students.
The senior student fell through an opening in the stairs and plummeted 40 feet, sustaining trauma to her head and body, according to the New York Times.
