Tiger Woods captures fifth Masters golf title

Tiger Woods reacts to his birdie putt on 15 during the second round of the Masters golf tournament Friday

The legendary golf tournament held at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia has seen quite a few winners in its storied history - including Woods himself, back in his prime in the early 2000s - but today, it witnessed a comeback of sorts.

The victory came 14 years after winning his last Green Jacket and prompted emotional scenes as Woods embraced his mother Kultida, and his children Sam and Charlie after holing a putt on the last to move to 15 major titles, within three of all-time great Jack Nicklaus.

"I'm a little hoarse from yelling", said Woods, whose last Masters win came back in 2005. And when I made the putt I don't know what I did but I screamed.

In 1997 Tiger hugged his father beside the 18th green after claiming his first title, 22 years later he embraced his children in nearly exactly the same spot, amid nearly unprecedented scenes at Augusta as the crowd cheered wildly. "My dad was here in 97 (when he won his first Masters) and now I'm the dad with two kids there".

A 15th major success was secured in sensational fashion on Sunday as Woods overhauled Francesco Molinari's two-shot overnight lead to prevail by one stroke.

Two years ago he didn't know if he would play golf again, now Tiger Woods has ended an 11 year major drought to claim his fifth US Masters title after an incredible final round at Augusta.

In a desperate attempt to get the season's first major across the finish line before the storm hit, officials pushed up start times and sent golfers off in threesomes from both the first and 10th tees.

"It's overwhelming. Because of what transpired a year ago - I was lucky to be playing again". The two double bogeys ended his Green Jacket bid.
