Boy, 5, thrown from shopping mall in Minneapolis - man arrested

Minneapolis Police on April 12 2019

Witnesses said Emmanuel Deshawn Aranda, 24, either pushed or threw the 5-year-old boy on Friday morning from the third level of the Bloomington mall's interior to the first-level floor almost 40 feet below, police said.

In the press conference about the incident, Bloomington Police Chief Jeff Potts said Landen is "receiving care".

A witness, Brian Johnson, told WCCO-TV on Friday that he heard a woman scream that her child had been thrown from the balcony.

He said she was screaming, 'Everybody pray, everybody pray. "Oh my God, my baby, someone threw him over the edge".

On Friday, 24-year old Emmanuel Deshawn Aranda allegedly threw the child, who has not been identified, from the third floor of the mall, police said. Aranda faces a preliminary charge of attempted homicide and is being held at the Hennepin County Jail.

He reiterated that the family did not know Aranda and said they "are completely clueless as to why this monster would target their family with this heinous act of violence".

In a statement, the police force said: "At this time the suspect does not appear to be known to the victim or to the victim's family". The boy was rushed to a local hospital with "significant injuries" from the 40-foot fall, authorities said, and was still being treated 24 hours later.

Aranda was banned from the mall for one year. "He was enjoying a day at the Mall of America with his mom and friend on Friday morning when a stranger maliciously grabbed him and threw him over the 3rd floor balcony for no apparent reason", the family friend continued.

'Please pray for my cousins handsome son Landen, ' she wrote.

He asked the public to keep the boy's family and first responders in their thoughts and prayers.

According to Potts, witnesses told police the person suspected of pushing or throwing the child 'took off running immediately after the incident'.

Police said Aranda tried to get away after the incident but was found later inside of the mall's transit station.

According to court records, the suspect has been previously barred from the Mall of America.

'We have counseling services available for anyone who may need assistance. As the Bloomington Police Department continues to investigate how and why this isolated incident happened, we will provide our full cooperation'.

Aranda also was accused of walking into a mall store and sweeping his hand across a display table, breaking glasses. Two misdemeanors stemmed from incidents at the mall in 2015.

Aranda assaulted a woman inside Twin City Grill after she refused to buy him food.
