Pep Guardiola defends Manchester City tactics in Tottenham defeat

"We knew it from weeks ago, how it would be between these important games and Tottenham in the Champions League". I do not agree with what Ilkay says. That's why we chose to play a different type of game.

However, despite fears that Alli may have been forced to spend more time on the sidelines, he could play with a protective cast as Tottenham take on Huddersfield Town in the Premier League tomorrow (April 13). We would attack in the right moment - we have two games, not one.

"There are games when we concede a goal and we are not there, but in this case we conceded a goal and nothing happened".

Fourth-placed Spurs need to finish the season strongly to ensure they qualify for the Champions League next season and are coming under increased pressure from Arsenal and Manchester United.

It might have paid off had Sergio Aguero not had a first-half penalty saved and, speaking ahead of Sunday's Premier League trip to Crystal Palace, Guardiola remained broadly satisfied with a performance he would not rank alongside some of the more dramatic knockout-stage collapses he and City have suffered in Europe's leading club competition. They can punish us.

"We have been incredible for the past 20 months", Guardiola said. "We have won 180 points in two seasons". "Unfortunately we couldn't score but we have the second leg with our friends at home and we'll go for the semi-finals".

In a much tighter title race this season, with City just behind Liverpool, the Eagles' 3-2 win at the Etihad in December could yet be the game that costs Guardiola's men.

"Roy Hodgson is an experienced manager with a lot of different countries, he knows how to handle these situations".

"They are really well organised, and up front, they have quality players. We know what we are playing for and we are going to prepare well", added Guardiola.

The midfielder felt it was in keeping with other "nervous" Champions League displays that mean City are not yet a "big team".
