The administration has said it will refuse to release such information for Trump, who as a candidate broke with convention but not law by refusing to make his tax returns public.

The report states that Neal brushed aside comments made by Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin that he doesn't have to order the IRS to provide them as lacking "merit". "Moreover, judicial precedent commands that none of the concerns raised can legitimately be used to deny the committee's request", Neal told IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig in his letter.

House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal, D-Mass., told the IRS that the law gives Congress a right to the six years of Trump's personal and business tax returns, and set a deadline for the agency to respond by April 23.

President Donald Trump arrives at the International Union of Operating Engineers International Training and Education Center on April 10, 2019, in Crosby, Texas.

Asked about the letter Saturday, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said he would respond to within the new deadline set by Neal but he did not promise to produce Trump's tax returns by that time.

In that letter, Mnuchin also questioned the scope of Congress's investigative authority and Neal's stated reason for the request - that he wants them to insure that the IRS is properly auditing presidents. Bernie Sanders returns to the friendly terrain of Wisconsin on Friday to kick off a swing through pivotal states that are part of the Democratic "blue wall" strategy for 2020.

A new letter by Rep. Richard Neal, the House Ways and Means Committee chairman, comes after the Trump administration asked for more time to consider his initial request last week.

Mnuchin took issue with Neal's characterization of the dispute as a straightforward issue in light of the law governing the matter. He said that he was under audit and didn't intend to turn anything over until that process had been completed.

Mnuchin revealed in congressional testimony that White House lawyers consulted with Treasury on Trump's tax returns.

Donald Trump will have to release five years of tax returns if he wants appear on the IL 2020 presidential ballot, the state's senate has ruled. "We have people working on it diligently".

The issue appears sure to end up in federal court.

The Democrat chairman warned that failure to comply, would be interpreted as a "denial" of the request.

The fight over access to Trump's tax returns is expected to be a long legal battle. "The legal implications of this request could affect protections for all Americans against politically-motivated disclosures of personal tax information, regardless of which party is in power".
