Child hurt, suspect arrested in Mall of America incident

A 24-year-old man was arrested Friday in an incident in which a 5-year-old child may have been pushed or thrown from a balcony at the Mall of America police said

Brian Johnson told WCCO-TV the woman was screaming, "Everybody pray, everybody pray".

A 5-year-old was hospitalized after an incident at the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minn., April 12, 2019. Details of his condition weren't immediately available. Potts said police managed to apprehend the suspect inside the mall and they do not believe there is a threat to the public.

The boy fell to the first floor alongside escalators by the Michael Kors and Clarks stores.

It has occasionally been the scene of crimes or disruptive protests, and the mall's website touts extensive security training for its officers. The melee was caught on YouTube, but police concluded the brawl - the worst case of violence at the mall in more than 15 years - was not organized through social media as initially feared.

One witness told CBS Minnesota a woman was screaming that someone threw her child from the third floor balcony.

A Mall of America spokesperson said in a statement that any additional information about the incident will come from police.

Police have confirmed a suspect has been arrested after the child, 5, was chucked from the balcony at the shopping centre in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Per CNN, Potts said, "The child did suffer significant injuries". Police don't think there is any relationship between the man and the child or the child's family.

The Bloomington Police Chief did not reveal the suspects name but said he was a 24-year-old man who is now in police custody.

Potts said the incident was isolated - that Aranda and child had not known each other prior - and that investigators are "actively trying to figure out why this occurred ... whether it was an interaction up on the floor or why that is". Following that incident, he was convicted of obstructing a legal process by interfering with a police officer. The child was treated at the scene and transported to the hospital.
