3 American soldiers, 1 US contractor killed in Afghanistan

According to the NATO-led Resolute Support mission in the country, the troops' convoy hit a roadside bomb that also wounded three U.S. troops.

The Taliban said a suicide bomber detonated his explosives-laden auto near the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation base in Bagram district, in the Parwan Province.

The U.S. and NATO Resolute Support mission issued a statement "to clarify initial reporting" about Monday's roadside bombing of an American convoy near the main U.S. base.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, stating on Twitter that the suicide auto bombing destroyed one armored vehicle and killed or injured several foreign troops.

A spokesperson for the Parwan governor said a suicide bomber had targeted a convoy of coalition forces at Bagram.

A USA contractor working alongside troops in Afghanistan has been found alive after a blast that killed three American service members and wounded three others.

The wounded were evacuated and were receiving medical care, the statement said.

"US service members have sacrificed their lives in Afghanistan to keep us safe and no cowardly act of terror will impede our efforts to achieve peace", he said. It added that in accordance with U.S. Department of Defense policy, the names of service members killed in action were being withheld until after the notification of next of kin. The violence has killed at least five people and injured dozens more. He said Afghans want peace, but "they don't want to live the way that the Taliban want them to live".

A smaller number of United States troops operate in Afghanistan under a counter-terrorism mission.

In February, the top U.S. envoy seeking to broker peace in Afghanistan met the Taliban's co-founder in an attempt to end the 17-year conflict.

Last week, USA envoy Zalmay Khalilzad called for a "comprehensive and inclusive" intra-Afghan dialogue between the government, women, youth and civil society.

A series of U.S. -Taliban meetings has raised hopes that a political solution might finally be achieved almost 20 years after U.S. military forces entered Afghanistan in the wake of the September 11, 2001, attacks.

Negotiations between Khalilzad and the Taliban are expected to continue in Doha later this month.
