While the Oculus Quest was announced past year, it's going on sale at the same time as the Oculus Rift S: "spring 2019" according to Oculus. That also means that the full existing game library will work on the new headset and new titles will continue to work on the original Rift model. The Oculus Rift S is a Rift platform compatible headset that connects to peoples' PCs and doesn't require external sensors.
Both the Oculus Rift S and Oculus Quest are priced at $399 each, and will launch later this spring.
Unlike the company's previous product launches, which have concentrated on pro-grade and self-contained mobile hardware, the Oculus Rift S is a true replacement for the Oculus Rift - which is to be retired once the Rift S has launched in the spring.
The Rift S will feature a higher resolution display.
Oculus Rift S Model Will Take PC Owners Into Games In Spring 2019
The budget Oculus Go is sticking around for now, though it's being framed as a more basic VR content viewer than a serious gaming device. Taking a page from the HTC Vive, this feature lets you see your real-life surroundings without taking the headset off, allowing you to easily sketch out a designated play area for room-scale VR experiences, or simply give your eyes a break from all the virtual action. It also means there will still be software updates for the older headset. There's been a small bump in resolution to 1280×1440 pixels per eye, though the frame rate of the displays is dropping from 90hz to 80hz.
The Oculus Rift S uses "Oculus Insight" tracking to catch every movement you make without the need for external sensors. We don't have specific details on field of view or lenses yet, so we don't know if the Rift S does away with god rays, or strives for increased immersion. This, however, comes at a cost: The redesigned headset no longer comes bundled with any headphones at all, and those who do not want to shell out extra for a pair are left using built-in speakers which pipe sound through the head straps. In addition, the company has announced the Oculus Quest, which is the brand's upcoming standalone VR headset.
But the Rift S's biggest upgrade is the inclusion of five cameras built into the headset: Two in front, one on either side, and one up top.
