Mike Trout, Angels close to record $432 million, 12-year deal

Mike Trout is close to finalizing a 12-year $430 million contract with the Los Angeles Angels according to reports

The deal dwarfs previous contract records in baseball and highlights the ongoing conversation about player valuation, in a league in which members have never been shy about opening their checkbooks.

The Los Angeles Angels and the 27-year-old outfielder are finalizing a record-breaking, 12-year contract worth more than $430 million, sources told ESPN's Jeff Passan. Trout's contract would replace the final two years on the six-year $144.5 million contract he signed with the Angels in 2014.

Trout would have become a free agent following the 2020 season, and his new contract keeps him with the Angels through 2030.

Trout's salary will average almost $36 million per year, passing the $34.4 average annual value of Arizona's Zack Greinke. Speculation built that he could bounce to the Phillies when his contract expired - Trout grew up less than an hour away in New Jersey - but the Angels declared their commitment to the superstar.

Of course, fellow pro athletes chimed in, as did the general sports Twitter population, following the reports. The deal is also worth more than what boxer Canelo Alvarez is making with DAZN, according to ESPN.

Mike Trout, the best player in baseball, isn't going anywhere for a long, long time. Following the rejection, Betts put together his best season in 2018 by leading the majors in batting (.346) and slugging (.640) while hitting 32 homers, stealing 30 bases and winning his third straight Gold Glove.

Los Angeles selected Trout with the 25th overall pick in the 2009 amateur draft, and he signed for a bonus of $1,215,000. He won the award in 2014 and 2016 and finished second again past year, arguably his best season yet, in which he slashed.312/.460/.628 with 39 home runs and 79 RBIs in 140 games. It is ten years and $363.5M on top of the two years and $66.5M remaining on his current contract.
