Deadly Palestinian attack puts security in focus before Israel polls

Israel arrests at least seven Palestinians in West Bank raids

Rabbi Achiad Ettinger, who was critically hurt in Sunday's terror attack in the West Bank, has died of his wounds, his family said Monday.

Israel is "mourning" a 47-year-old rabbi, Achiad Ettinger, who died on Monday after being shot a day earlier by a 19-year-old Palestinian, Mr Netanyahu said on Twitter.

The death toll brings to two settlers killed when a Palestinian stabbed an Israeli soldier near the Ariel settlement before opening fire from his rifle on Israelis at a nearby bus station.

Another soldier was severely injured when the terrorist shot him at the nearby Gitai Avishar Junction during the second phase of the attack.

Rabbi Ettinger was hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit in critical condition after being shot in the head.

Israeli forces arrested at least seven Palestinians from various areas of the occupied West Bank, in multiple overnight raids across the area, Palestine's news agency (WAFA) reported on Monday.

"The Ettinger family announces the passing of the holy Rabbi Achad Ettinger, who fell on the sanctification of the Lord by a lowly murderer during an attack in which he manifested mental strength and daring courage, while shooting the despicable terrorist", Haaretz reported.

"Heart-breaking news of the death of Rabbi Achiad Ettinger ז " ל who was injured in yesterday's awful terrorist attack that also claimed the life of Staff Sergeant Gal Keidan", Rivlin said in a statement released by his office.

"We will not leave a stone unturned", a senior security source told JNS on Sunday, hours into the search.

Palestinian attacks against Israeli settlers and soldiers occur sporadically in the West Bank.

The attack on Sunday came just two days after a flare up between Israel and Hamas forces in the besieged Gaza Strip after Israeli forces bombarded the Gaza Strip with airstrikes, after two rockets from Gaza were fired at Tel Aviv on the night before.

Israel has called on Palestinians for years to halt the stipends, which benefit roughly 35,000 families of Palestinians killed, wounded, or jailed in the conflict with Israel, many of them accused of involvement in terror. The military says it has surveyed his home for its future demolition.

Palestinian officials have said the Palestinians will not accept any of the taxes Israel gathers for the PA, if it does not transfer the full amount to Ramallah. Gantz, a former armed forces chief, said Regev was using Israeli deaths for "political propaganda".

Immediately after Sunday's shooting, two militant Palestinian factions - Hamas and Islamic Jihad - released statements praising the attack as "heroic".

"Israelis attacking Palestinians are condemned, prosecuted and incarcerated by the Israeli government", Friedman added.
