Gun City owner David Tipple says the Christchurch shooting accused bought weapons from his store

The slaughter by an avowed white supremacist of 50 Muslims last Friday stunned the usually peaceful, isolated country, casting a spotlight on the ease with which the accused killer, Australian Brenton Tarrant, legally purchased the semi-automatic weapons he used.

David Tipple, the managing director of Gun City, whose online store sold Tarrant four weapons, said he felt no responsibility for the killings.

None of the guns sold to Tarrant were military-style, semi-automatic weapons, according to Tipple.

Police Commissioner Mike Bush said there would be a strong police presence with 200 extra police staff on duty and that New Zealander's should return to their routines.

A man and woman hug each other after leaving flowers next to a cordon blocking a road that leads to Linwood Mosque, one of the two mass shooting sites in Christchurch, New Zealand, March 17, 2019. She said these platforms had "a wide reach" and this was "a problem that goes way beyond New Zealand".

For nearly three days forensics teams, many flown in from across New Zealand, have been working through multiple crime scenes - at the Al Noor and Linwood mosques as well as a house in Dunedin, the southeastern city where the suspected gunman, Brenton Tarrant, lived.

"All Gun City sales to this individual followed a police verified online mail order process". We detected nothing extraordinary about the licence holder.

Peters, whose New Zealand First party has previously opposed changes, said he backed the prime minister fully.

New Zealand has in the past tried to tighten firearm laws, but a strong gun lobby and culture of hunting has stymied such efforts. No licence is required to buy a large round magazine, which can be illegally modified for use in such a weapon. Tens of thousands of weapons were handed in as laws were enacted to make it much tougher to own firearms. "There is no valid reason to own fully or semi automatic weapons in New Zealand".

"However because we do not have a registry, we don't know how many there are or where they are".

There are an estimated 1.5 million firearms in New Zealand - roughly one for every three citizens and more than double the rate in Australia.

The prime minister had vowed over the weekend that the country's gun laws would be toughened.

Facebook said it removed 1.5 million videos of the shootings during the first 24 hours after the massacre.

"What we have a responsibility to pursue in the aftermath of this terrorist attack will include work around gun laws.there are other areas we will discuss as well", she told One News.

Some families have expressed frustration that the bodies of nearly all victims have not been released while authorities carry out post mortems and investigations.

Mo, a volunteer who had flown in from Brisbane to wash the bodies, said the people who died in the mosques were classified as martyrs. He asked to be identified by just one name.

The two mosques involved in the shootings have been closed since the massacre, but are expected to reopen by Friday prayers after cleansing blessings were carried out.

"As a Cabinet we were absolutely clear, the terror attack on Friday (March 15) was the worst act of terrorism on our shores", she said. "I imagine the opposition will be supportive".
