Chiefs land Tyrann Mathieu to three-year deal

Safety Tyrann Mathieu to leave Texans join Chiefs

And just a couple of hours later, Jackson agreed to sign a three-year deal with the Denver Broncos that can reportedly pay him as much as $33 million.

By comparison, Mathieu, a Pro Bowler and a first-team All-Pro selection from 2015, produced 89 combined tackles, 3.0 sacks, two interceptions, eight pass deflections, and a forced fumble through 16 starts. Before then, the New Orleans native hadn't played a full season without missing multiple games to injury. Per the report, the deal with Kansas City will be worth $42 million over three years after Mathieu played on a one-year prove-it contract in Houston for 2018.

Mathieu can't officially sign until the league year begins on Wednesday, but he can negotiate with teams.

Mathieu, 26, was a third-round pick of the Arizona Cardinals in 2013.

Instead, Mathieu will earn an average of $14 million per year - the same amount freed up by Justin Houston's release - in Kansas City as a key piece of new coordinator Steve Spagnuolo's defense.

With Morse's departure, the Chiefs will likely turn to Austin Reiter as their starting center.

He had some injury problems early in his career, finishing three of his first four National Football League seasons on the injured reserve list.

The NFL Network's Ian Rappoport is also reporting about the impeding free agent deal, saying Mathieu was their top target. He was on a one-year, $7 million deal. Foles had been in Philadelphia, where he helped the Eagles to their Super Bowl LII win.
